If you consume eggs, it’s crucial to stay informed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have reported a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to egg consumption. As of June 5, 79 individuals across seven states have experienced Salmonella infections from eating contaminated eggs. Here’s what you should know to safeguard your health.
1.7 Million Eggs Being Recalled
The FDA has announced that August Egg Company from Hilmar, California, is recalling 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and certified organic brown eggs due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Initial Symptoms of Salmonella
Salmonella can lead to serious infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems. The FDA notes that healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Severe Symptoms to Watch For
While most people only exhibit initial symptoms, Salmonella infection can, in rare cases, advance to severe conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
Where and When Contaminated Eggs Were Sold
The FDA informs that the contaminated eggs were distributed from February 3, 2025, to May 15, 2025. They were sold at retail locations in California and Nevada, including Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raley’s, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4, 2025, to June 4, 2025.
Identification of Recalled Eggs
Recalled eggs will feature a plant code number (P-6562 or CA5330) on the carton, along with Julian Dates between 32 and 126. The eggs were packed in fiber or plastic cartons with these codes printed on one side.
